Partying with Toledo Bands Nov 1st, 2008

No response, Nov 05, 2008

Wow, what a week it’s been already. With the elections yesterday, and then all those Halloween parties last weekend. I finally got the time to get these pics and videos posted, something I usually get to by at least Monday or Tuesday of the following week. Last Saturday night we set out to see 3 local Toledo Bands, and we managed to catch 2 of them live.

Chris Shutters Band

First we went to see Chris Shutters over at Mulvaney’s Bunker. I had heard many great things about Chris, and somehow never got to see him in the Blade Battle of the Bands (which he won) or since. Chris performs as a duo around town on weeknights, and the full 3 piece band (Chris Shutters Band, or CSB) places on the weekend.

I wasn’t really prepared for what at saw at Mulvaney’s that night. I’ve seen a lot of bands, a lot of guitar players, and a lot of singers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen (in Toledo) anyone that was effortlessly and equally as good at both lead vocal and lead guitar that wasn’t a national act coming through town for a one night concert. On top of that his arrangements of cover songs was very unique, distinct - and far beyond what I’ve seen in any local bar.

I was able to take one video while I was there, this is “Land Down Under” (it’s a bit dark - Mulvaney’s doesn’t exactly have very good stage lighting):

I wish I would recorded his version of “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” for you to see, his rendition is one you won’t soon forget. If you haven’t seen Chris and his band, I would recommend going to watch them live ASAP!

Here’s some pics of the band I took while I was there:

This one pic I included for any of you guitar players out there. It’s a pic of Chris Shutters’ pedal board on the stage floor in front of him. Notice something strange about his pedals? I was wondering myself, what function exactly the bottle of hot sauce performs (LOL)?

Then we went to see Catch 33 over at Centre Stage - were their “Halloween Havoc” party was in full swing. Catch 33 is a 5 man cover band that plays classic, alternative, 80’s, and modern rock all over town. They put on a great show and will keep you rockin’ and dancing all night long!

I took this video of them playing “Run Juliet Run” (again, light at Centre Stage are more for dancing than recording!):

Here’s some pics of the guys in the band:

Out on the T-Town Fri, Oct 17, 2008

No response, Oct 18, 2008

Last night we had some fun seeing Toledo Bands around T-Town. We went down to The Blarney to catch “Gin Bunny” rocking the house at “The Blarney” downtown (N. Huron at Monroe). The dance floor was plenty packed. I didn’t have time to stay long enough to talk to the lads between sets, but here’s some pics we took of the guys while on stage -

We went over to Club Soda to see “Catch 33″ after that, but unfortunately they were on the last song of the set. I’ll have to get some pics again next time guys! We trucked it on down the road to go to Dundee so we could see Hugh Rock again at Thirsty’s. I know, I know - we saw Hugh Rock last week…but Ed was out sick and Mick (from Catch 33) was on lead guitar duties. Ed was back in fine form this week - we hope you’re feeling much better now!

Jim was nice enough to let me on stage with the band to play 3 songs - which was great fun. Yes, the bald headed guy on stage is me (John) - and I’m the one who runs T-Town Sound. Actually, my new band will be playing tonight - but more on that a bit later. Check back for more details…

Partying with Toledo Bands Oct 11

No response, Oct 13, 2008

Last weekend was the second weekend of “Rocktober”, which found us checking out two local glass city bands. Now, the night wasn’t without it’s problems - since we set out to see Toledo band “Catch 33″ perform at Pub St. George (which was just block from Ottawa Tavern on Adams St). What we didn’t know was that Pub St. George is not GONE and has been replaced by “The Attic”. In addition - it doesnt look like they have band anymore.

So, rather than waste time we got right down to business just a block away and stopped by at the old Ottawa Tavern to see Steven Jay and “The Ogres”. They know how to rock, and we got to hear them play some great songs, including the original “Cemetary Man” (which I had heard on their MySpace about a hundred times). You should see them when you’re out - they will be playing Oct 30, 31, and Nov 1 at Centre Stage on Alexis (formerly Nashville’s). I only wish we had time to stay longer so I could talk to guitarist E.J. Wells about his awesome Reverend guitars and Sunn amp!

Here’s some pics I took of The Ogres at Ottawa Tavern

Visit The Ogres MySpace profile here and listen to Cemetary Man and other originals for yourself!

Next we stopped downtown for a few to witness Velvet Jones plaving live on N. Huron in front on The Blarney on the street, but honestly there was waaaaay too many drunken people dancing for me to get any pics at all. Sorry guys, hope to get some next time and stay longer.

We were going to check out a few more places, but unfortunately we got a late start so we just hit the Firehouse 47 in Ottawa Lake before going home. Funny thing was, we got to see Catch 33 after all…well kinda. Unfortunately Ed (guitarist) from Hugh Rock was out sick (get well soon Ed!) and Mick Mason from Catch 33 filled in on lead guitar duties for the night (since their gig was canceled at what used to be “Pub St. George”. It was a lot of fun, and if we get the chance, we’re going to visit Catch 33 with the full band lineup at Club Soda this Friday or Saturday night.
