Partying with Toledo Bands Nov 22

No response, Nov 24, 2008

Last Saturday it was a blustery night, but we did manage to see 3 bands burning up some local stages with their music! This time around we were lucky enough to see 3 bands we had never seen before, and it was a lot of fun! The first place we went to was Main Street Bar (formerly Sodbusters) in Sylvania, OH.

The Rakeshakers

The Rakeshakers are a brand new band, but it’s members are certainly not new to the stage. The band is made up of Toledo band veterans who have a distinct command over the music they’ve been playing for years. The music they play could be defined as “classic rock”, but that’s a pretty wide genre nowadays. Maybe it’s better to classify as 60-70’s guitar based classic rock and blues. They are a tight 4 piece band, and Luke on lead guitar played some incredibly tasty licks on their version of Joe Walsh’s “Turn to Stone” - which also displayed the bands ability to sing awesome 3 part harmony. In the first set the Chicago blues classic “I’m A Man”, which was incredibly tight.

Here’s some pictures we took of the Rakeshakers at Main Street Bar in Sylvania:

The Rakeshakers are such a new band that they don’t even have a MySpace profile or web site just yet, but keep your eyes on our Toledo Bands page. We’ll link them as soon as it’s up!

Lifeline

Next we headed over to Firehouse 47 in Ottawa Lake, MI to see Lifeline play. Lifeline is a local original band who released their first CD “Shallow Skies” in 2007, and they’re in the studio as we speak in Saline, MI laying down tracks for their next release. Being busy recording in the studio doesn’t stop them from playing local bars for their fans. A Lifeline show can contain their high energy original rock tunes like “Desperate”, in addition to 80’s classic rock favorites like “Everything About You”, or “Fight for Your Right”. You get it all in a Lifeline show, originals and covers.

Here’s some pics we took of Lifeline at Firehouse 47 on Nov 22:

Buster Strange

Last we went to Joe’s Walnut in Petersburg, MI to see classic rock cover band “Buster Strange”. They’re motto is “Once you get a little strange you’re never the same…”, and how right they are! They’re a fun band to watch, the bass player Gary is often all over the stage and running around the bar while he plays - we caught him a couple of times cuttin’ the rug on the dance floor! Whether it’s the drummer Ed singing “Through the Glass” or Gary singing “Talk Dirty To Me”, the dance floor always has people on it.

Here’s some pics we took of Buster Strange at Joe’s Walnut on Nov 22:

MASFiNA

So - last Saturday we went to see MasFina at Firehouse 47 in Ottawa Lake. After the good time we had the week before at the Firehouse, why not spend a second Sat night there watching a great local band? The last time we saw MasFina was the middle of last August, so it was high time we stopped by to see them again.

Masfina is a 3 piece band consisting of Sidd Siddall on drums, Aaron Martinez on Bass, and Dan Strikland on Lead Guitar. Don’t let their size fool you, they can put on quite a show! From the opening of the very first MasFina (Tequila!) music on the first set - the goal of the band is to entertain and fill the dance floor. All 3 members of the band share lead vocal throughout the night, and their song list might just shock you.

We’d seen Masfina before, and they have some great songs on the set lists - like TNT (AC/DC), Psycho (Puddle of Mudd), Dani California (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Fake It (Seether). One of the shockers of night was when the opening chords started for song I was pretty sure I knew - “Who Knew” by Pink. Sure enough, bassist Aaron Martinez sang the entire song note for note. But it’s just that kind of range that allows this power-trio to play songs you would never see any other live band do, like Baby Got Back, I Kissed A Girl, and Bust a Move. We saw them do both Erotic City by Prince, and Bad Girlfriend by Theory of a Deadman. They even played the 80’s classic “Let’s go All the Way”, AND Justin Timberlake later that set.

Pictures of MasFina from Firehouse 47 Nov 15th, 2008:

The guys in the band were great, and they play nearly every weekend from August until May each year, Click here to view their MySpace to see where they are playing next! They have quite the following, you’ll know once you get to a MasFina show and half the bar is wearing a Masfina T-Shirt! I know, I’ve got my own to wear now too (thanks Sidd!).

That first picture we took of Masfina on stage turned out so good, I decided to make some desktop wallpaper out of it. If you want to have MasFina as your desktop wallpaper on your computer, just click on of these links depending on your screen resolution and “save as” or “set as” desktop wallpaper!
